How do I check a subreddit's stats?

To check a subreddit's stats, enter its name into this tool: it reads Reddit's public API and returns the live subscriber count, subreddit age, and public description, plus the active-user count when Reddit returns it. Posts per day is not exposed by Reddit's public API, so the checker shows it as unavailable rather than estimating it. No login, no API key, and no personal data are required.

Check a subreddit

Reads public data only. No login or API key needed.

No results yet. Enter a subreddit above and press Check to see its subscribers, age and description.

This tool reads the Reddit public subreddit API with no authentication. Subscriber and active-user counts reflect the state at the time of the check and can change at any time after. Private, quarantined, and banned subreddits return no public stats.

What this checker measures.

Subscriber count tells you the size of a community, but it does not tell you whether that community is actually active. A subreddit with a million subscribers and a few hundred current active users is far quieter than its subscriber count suggests, and a smaller, more active subreddit can be a better place to post than a large, dormant one.

Age matters for a similar reason: a subreddit created recently has had less time to build a moderation culture and an established audience, while a long-running one has settled norms worth reading before you post.

This checker pulls all of it directly from Reddit's own public API, live, with nothing cached and nothing estimated. If a figure is not available from that API, such as posts per day, the checker says so explicitly rather than approximate it.

How the check works.

Step 1

Enter a subreddit

Type or paste any subreddit name. The tool strips a leading r/ or /r/ prefix automatically, so either format works.

Step 2

Public API read

The checker reads the Reddit public subreddit API with no cookies and no session, exactly as a logged-out visitor would see it.

Step 3

Live stats returned

Subscriber count, current active users, subreddit age, NSFW flag, and public description are returned in one result, or a clear reason if none are available.

The subreddit lookup this checker runs maps to one of the 59 REST endpoints documented per the Redditapis OpenAPI spec at docs.redditapis.com/openapi.json, so you can pull the same stats for hundreds of subreddits at once, or track them continuously, with a Redditapis key.

What metrics to track for each subreddit

A single check is a snapshot. If you are choosing where to post, or watching a community you care about, a few numbers matter more than the rest, and they are worth reading together rather than one at a time.

Subscriber count

Size sets the ceiling on reach, but it is the slowest-moving number and the easiest to over-read. Treat it as context for the other metrics, not as a ranking on its own.

Active users against subscribers

Divide accounts active now by subscribers and you get a rough engagement ratio. Two communities of the same size can differ by an order of magnitude here, and the more active one is usually the better place to be seen. Take more than one reading, because activity swings with time of day and day of week.

Weekly subscriber growth

Growth tells you whether a community is rising or fading, which a single count never can. The checker does not store history, so to measure growth you read the same subreddit on a schedule, keep each subscriber count with its date, and compare week to week. Check at the same hour each week so time-of-day swings in activity do not muddy the comparison.

Age and rules

An older community has settled norms and usually stricter rules about self-promotion. Read the rules before posting; the subreddit rules endpoint returns them as structured data if you are checking many communities at once.

Expected results from a check

A public subreddit returns its subscriber count, founding date, NSFW flag and description in one result. Active-now appears when Reddit includes it in the response and shows as unavailable when it does not; the checker never fills the gap with an estimate.

Why we never estimate a missing number

An estimated active-user count looks exactly like a real one, and people make posting decisions on it. If Reddit does not return a figure, the honest output is to say so, which is also why posts per day is shown as unavailable: Reddit's public API does not expose it, and counting a subreddit's own post history through the API is the way to get a real figure.

Private, quarantined and banned communities

A private, quarantined or banned community, or a name that does not exist, returns a clear reason instead of numbers, so a blank result tells you something about the community rather than about the tool. Check the spelling first; if it is right, the community is simply not publicly readable.

Every field the about endpoint returns

Behind the checker is the same subreddit about endpoint the API exposes, and these are the fields it returns for every community:

FieldWhat it tells you
subscribersMember count at the moment of the read.
active_user_countAccounts active right now, or null when Reddit does not return it.
created_utc, createdWhen the community was founded, as a timestamp and an ISO date.
subreddit_type, over_18Public, restricted or private, and the NSFW flag.
title, public_description, descriptionThe short tagline and the full sidebar text.
lang, icon_img, banner_imgDeclared language and the community's artwork.

Want to monitor multiple subreddits over time?

Checking one community by hand is fine. Watching twenty of them every week is a job for code. With an API key, each subreddit read is one call at $0.0015, so checking 20 subreddits once a week for a year is1,040 calls, about $1.56. Store each reading with its date and you have the growth history no single check can give you. If what you actually want is to hear when a keyword shows up in those communities, amanaged monitorwatches them for you and pushes matches to a webhook.

More free Reddit tools

Two sibling tools answer the questions that usually come next. Thesimilar subreddits findersuggests communities close to the one you just checked, and theshadowban checkertells you whether your own account is visible before you post there. If you are pricing a bigger project, theReddit API cost calculatorturns a call count into a monthly figure.

Ready to extract insights from Reddit at scale?

The checker answers one subreddit at a time. The API answers the same question for hundreds, alongside the posts, comments and search results that explain why a community is growing. New accounts start with free credits and no card, so you can run your first batch of subreddit reads before deciding anything.

FAQ.

Subscriber count, subreddit age, whether it is marked NSFW, and its public description, read directly from Reddit's own public API at the moment you run the check, not from a cached or estimated source. Active-now is shown when the API returns it and reported as unavailable otherwise; posts per day is never exposed by that API, so it always shows as unavailable.

No. Reddit's public API does not expose a posts-per-day figure for a subreddit, so this checker reports it as unavailable rather than fabricate an estimate. If you need real post-volume data, the Redditapis API lets you pull and count a subreddit's own post history directly.

A subreddit returns no public stats when it is private, quarantined, banned, or does not exist. The checker reports which of these applies rather than a bare error, so you know whether to double-check the spelling or accept that the community is not publicly readable.

Reddit's own API can return a real-time active-user count, but it is not currently coming through for every subreddit this checker queries. Rather than show a stale or estimated number, the checker reports it as unavailable until that figure is reliably available.

No. The checker reads public subreddit data that any visitor can access without logging in. No Reddit account, no API key, and no personal data are required to run the check.
