Acceptable Use

Act lawfully, respect people, and follow Reddit's own rules. Nine sections, skim the sidebar to jump anywhere.

The short version

  • Act lawfully, respect people, and follow Reddit's own rules when you use your Reddit account through our API.
  • Forbidden: spam, harassment, illegal content (especially CSAM), election interference, automated mass-account creation, ban evasion, anything that violates Reddit's User Agreement or a subreddit's posted rules.
  • For clear violations (CSAM, sanctions, automated mass account creation, ban-evasion patterns), we suspend without notice.
  • For ambiguous cases, you get a 14-day cure period to explain or fix.
  • Report abuse at emma@redditapis.com. We acknowledge within 2 business days.

Foundations

Why this exists and the rules of the road.

01

Scope

This Acceptable Use Policy (the "AUP") governs all use of redditapis.com (the "Service") by every customer, end user, agent, and integrator. It is incorporated by reference into our Terms of Service. Violation of this AUP is a material breach of the Terms.

02

Core principles

When you use the Service, you must:

  1. Act lawfully in your own jurisdiction and in the jurisdictions you reach.
  2. Respect people. No harassment, targeted abuse, or incitement to violence.
  3. Comply with Reddit. Your use of the connected Reddit account must follow Reddit's then-current User Agreement, Content Policy, and API Terms at redditinc.com/policies.
  4. Respect subreddit rules. Each subreddit sets its own posted rules. You are responsible for reading and following them.
  5. Respect rate limits. Ours and Reddit's.

Prohibited Activities

What you cannot do with the Service. Illustrative, not exhaustive.

03

Prohibited activities

3.1 Illegal content and conduct

  • Distribute, transmit, or store any content illegal in either the UAE or the jurisdiction where the content is consumed.
  • Engage in fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing, or sanctions evasion.
  • Violate export-control laws of any jurisdiction with which you or we have a connection.

3.2 Child safety

  • Distribute, transmit, store, or solicit child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in any form. Zero tolerance. We report CSAM to NCMEC and to UAE authorities where applicable.
  • Engage in any form of child exploitation or grooming.
  • Sexualize minors in any form, real, AI-generated, illustrated, or text-only.

3.3 Harassment and targeted abuse

  • Direct sustained harassment, threats, doxing, or stalking at any individual or group.
  • Coordinate brigading or pile-on attacks against specific Reddit users, posts, or subreddits.
  • Post non-consensual intimate imagery.

3.4 Spam and inauthentic behavior

  • Submit repeated, low-value, or off-topic content at high volume.
  • Manipulate vote counts through automated voting, vote rings, or coordinated inauthentic activity.
  • Manufacture astroturf without clear, prominent disclosure.
  • Create or operate Reddit accounts at automated scale. Mass account creation is prohibited.

3.5 Ban evasion

  • Use the Service to evade a Reddit ban, suspension, or quarantine on you or on a subreddit you operate.
  • Connect a Reddit account through the Service to resume activity that Reddit has prohibited.

3.6 Account takeover and credential abuse

  • Submit Reddit credentials through /api/reddit/login that you do not own and are not authorized to use.
  • Use the Service in connection with credential-stuffing, phishing, or any other unauthorized-access campaign.
  • Sell, transfer, or rent access to your redditapis.com account or to any Reddit session authenticated through the Service.

3.7 Election integrity and civic harm

  • Coordinate election-related disinformation campaigns.
  • Impersonate election officials, candidates, or political parties.
  • Suppress voter turnout through false information about voting times, places, or eligibility.

3.8 Security harm

  • Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service except through our published responsible-disclosure program at emma@redditapis.com.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service or any related infrastructure.
  • Introduce malware, ransomware, viruses, worms, or any other malicious code.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other customers' accounts, API keys, or data.

3.9 Intellectual-property infringement

Use of the Service to distribute content that infringes another party's copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, or other IP right. Copyright concerns: emma@redditapis.com.

3.10 Privacy harm

  • Collect or distribute personally identifiable information of others without lawful basis.
  • Build datasets of Reddit users for purposes prohibited by Reddit's policies or by applicable privacy law.

3.11 Violation of Reddit's rules

Any conduct that would violate Reddit's User Agreement or Content Policy if performed directly on Reddit, is also prohibited when performed through the Service.

Required Behavior

What we expect from you while you use the Service.

04

Required activities

4.1 Own the account

You must own, or be expressly authorized to operate, every Reddit account you connect through /api/reddit/login. See Terms of Service §5.

4.2 Honor Reddit rate limits

The Service does not override Reddit's rate limits. If Reddit returns a 429 to your request, back off. Repeated 429s from your traffic may cause us to throttle you to protect overall Service stability.

4.3 Honor our rate limits

Our per-account and per-IP rate limits are published in our docs. We adjust them periodically and publish notice for reductions.

4.4 Respect subreddit rules

Posting, commenting, or voting in a subreddit through the Service is subject to that subreddit's posted rules. Some subreddits prohibit any automated activity. Check before you act.

4.5 Disclose where required

If you operate a Reddit account on behalf of a brand, sponsor, or third party, disclose the relationship as required by applicable advertising law (FTC Endorsement Guides, UK ASA, EU UCPD) and by Reddit's rules on undisclosed promotion.

4.6 Cooperate with investigations

You must cooperate in good faith with our investigation of any report we receive about your use of the Service.

4.7 Keep credentials secure

Keep your redditapis.com API keys and your Reddit account credentials secure. Notify us at emma@redditapis.com immediately if you suspect compromise.

Enforcement

How we triage, suspend, and preserve evidence.

05

How we enforce

5.1 Reports

Anyone may report a suspected AUP violation by emailing emma@redditapis.com with:

  • The account or activity at issue (URL, post ID, user agent, request timestamps if known).
  • A description of the alleged violation.
  • The reporter's contact information (we keep reporter identity confidential unless ordered by a court).

We acknowledge abuse reports as soon as practicable, typically within 2 business days, and resolve most within 5 business days.

5.2 Triage tiers

Tier A, clear violation, immediate suspension without notice:

  • Active CSAM distribution.
  • Active sanctions or export-control violation.
  • Active automated mass account creation.
  • Active ban-evasion behavior already confirmed by Reddit.
  • Active security attack against us or third parties.
  • Court order requiring suspension.

We suspend immediately, preserve evidence, and notify the customer of the suspension and the reason as soon as practicable.

Tier B, probable violation, 14-day cure period:

  • Behavior that appears to violate the AUP but where intent or facts are ambiguous.
  • First-time violations that do not fall into Tier A.

We send written notice describing the conduct, the AUP section we believe is violated, and the change required. You have 14 days to cure, contest, or migrate off the Service.

Tier C, borderline conduct, advisory only: we email and ask for clarification. No enforcement action unless conduct escalates.

5.3 Suspension and termination

A suspension may be lifted upon cure. Termination is governed by Terms of Service §9.

5.4 Preservation

We preserve evidence of confirmed AUP violations for the retention period of our hosting and database providers, for use in defending claims or responding to lawful requests.

5.5 No waiver

Our decision not to enforce in a particular instance is not a waiver of our right to enforce later.

06

Coordination with Reddit

If we receive a request from Reddit, Inc. or a Reddit-employed safety team alleging that a customer's use of the Service violates Reddit's policies in a way that creates harm on the Reddit platform, we will:

  1. Evaluate the request for facial validity.
  2. Where the alleged conduct also violates this AUP, enforce per §5.2, typically Tier A for clear safety violations (CSAM, threats), Tier B otherwise.
  3. Reply to Reddit with the action we have taken.
  4. Notify the affected customer unless prohibited by law or unless notice would create a meaningful risk of additional harm.

We do not give Reddit unilateral or pre-cleared authority to suspend customers. Each request is evaluated on its merits.
